Quan Yin translates as The One Who Hears the Cries of the World, and she is the Chinese representation of the Boddhisattva Avalokiteswara. It is believed that a Bodhisattva (or Boddhisatva, as it is sometimes spelled), Kuan Yin was a human who has forsaken the final stage of enlightenment in order to help all earthly beings attain enlightenment first. This image of Kuan Yin shows her sitting on a Lotus Blossom, which is a symbol of purity of the heart (since it is able to maintain its beauty despite the fact that it grows in areas surrounded by mud).
